Looking like an Ice Age glacier, this gigantic cloud moved over Lake Michigan
Wednesday May 21st (2014). The effect is called advection fog, and happens when warm air moves over a cold surface. In fact, the Great Lakes are still at record lows and swimming in them now could cause hypothermia, even death.

Andrew Ballard, who made the video, also captured high quality photos of the event. Link to the stills

Search Is On for 17th Century Ship Wreck in Lake Michigan

ON LAKE MICHIGAN NEAR POVERTY ISLAND, Mich. — Divers began opening an underwater pit Saturday at a remote site in northern Lake Michigan that they say could be the resting place of the Griffin, a ship commanded by the 17th century French explorer La Salle.

U.S. and French archaeologists examined sediment removed from a hole dug near a timber slab that expedition leader Steve Libert discovered wedged in the lakebed in 2001. They found a 15-inch slab of blackened wood that might have been a human-fashioned "cultural artifact," although more analysis will be required to determine whether it was part of a vessel, project manager Ken Vrana said.

Unsolved mystery: Location of Flight 2501 that disappeared over Lake Michigan eludes searchers 63 years later

West Michigan author claims to crack mystery of Flight 2501

SOUTH HAVEN, MI – Valerie van Heest believes she has unraveled the 63-year-old mystery of Northwest Airlines Flight 2501. However, the location of the aircraft remains unknown.

NWA Flight 2501 was considered the worst aviation crash of its time and as one of the greatest tragedies of the Great Lakes. All 58 people aboard the flight on June 23, 1950 were lost when the plane went down over Lake Michigan. Aircraft debris and other evidence were found along the Lake Michigan shore near South Haven in the days following the accident.

Over the years, searchers have attempted to locate the plane at the bottom of the lake, to no avail. But van Heest, director of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association, said families of victims need not wait to learn what happened that night when 34-year-old Capt. Robert Lind decided to fly the plane into a dangerous storm that other pilots avoided.

Van Heest is the author a non-fiction book called "Fatal Crossing: The Mysterious Disappearance of NWA Flight 2501 and The Quest for Answers," that will be released this month by Holland-based publisher In Depth Editions.

Using 10 years of research, she recreates the last hours of the flight and connects a series of bad decisions and unfortunate events leading to the crash.

Fight against the 'vampire fish': Entire creek near Lake Michigan to be POISONED in an attempt to fight off invasion of killer species that sucks all the body fluid out of other fish

Wildlife workers are going to insert poisonous pesticides into a stream near Lake Michigan as they try to kill an invasive breed of 'vampire fish' that suck the blood out of other fish.

Adult sea lampreys, which reach lengths of 2 to 3 feet, resemble eels but behave more like leeches.

With round, disk-like mouths and sharp teeth, they latch onto fish and suck out their blood and other bodily fluids, killing or severely weakening the hosts.
